Smart contact lens

Smart contact lenses represent the ultimate challenge for wearables. User comfort places strict demands on the contact lens’s maximum thickness, softness, and water content. Sophisticated electronics must be integrated into an ultra-compact form factor with extreme constraints on power management. Furthermore, the limited lifespan of smart contact lenses results in a low threshold for acceptable product costs.

All these challenges were successfully overcome during the development of a smart contact lens for medical use.

Key Figures

  • Microelectronic and micro-optic, integrated into the shape and thickness of a standard contact lens (compatible with soft and hard contact lenses)
  • Wireless charging of a solid-state microbattery for safe and user-friendly power management
Characterizing smart contact lens

Our Contribution

  • Product developent from concept to prototype
  • Technology development, including demonstrators, prototypes, and testing equipment
  • Identification and evaluation of suppliers
  • Supply chain management across three continents

Outcome

Our multidisciplinary engineering team has successfully developed, built, and tested a smart contact lens for medical use. In doing so, we overcame extreme challenges in microelectronics integration and power management while ensuring patient comfort and ease of use.
